Why Raise Chickens?

Have you ever walked out your back door and had an egg hunt everyday? Do you like fresh eggs? Need I say more…raising chickens if for anything else the main reason is for the eggs. But myself not being one who likes eggs on a daily basis my reasoning comes from just pure enjoyment.

Today there are many people who are either returning to raising chickens in their backyard or just starting. With the economy as it is more and more people are looking for ways to become self-sufficient and raising chickens for your own supply eggs is just one of the many ways. Also I do not want to leave out the fact that chicken is something that is served at many dinner tables.

Are you a gardener who needs a steady supply of fertilizer? Well chickens supply that on just about an hourly basis. They also help patrol the bug population that is swarming in your yard. Daily my chickens make their rounds ensuring that all areas with a potential for bugs is identified and inspected. The rooster is usually the first on the job and then with his calling the hens come running to scratch the area clean of any bugs.

Need I say more? Between the daily supply of eggs, fertilizer for your yard and garden, and the bug patrol, what more could you want? One thing you need to ensure when deciding to raise chickens, make sure your local county ordinances allow chickens in your neighborhood. I happen to live on a mini-farm and what would a farm be without chickens. But before moving here I lived in a subdivision and it did not allow chickens. It allowed horses but no chickens! Why I do not know but that is one of the reasons I moved to the country. I’ve had horses and I have chickens and I would much rather have a chicken then a horse any day of the week.

Anyway here is one other reason I raise chickens…Baby Australorp Chicks
Now who can resist such cute little creatures? Not I!
